Flow Threshold

When the opening won’t close

A 12 week 1:1 mentoring programme for those navigating non-ordinary times

Call it an existential crisis, a spiritual emergency, an altered state -  it doesn't announce itself politely.

It arrives through psychedelics that went further than expected and haven't settled. Through grief that rewrote your sense of reality. Through a kundalini awakening, a spontaneous opening, a meditation practice that cracked something loose. Through labour, or illness, or a moment of beauty so intense it dissolved the boundary between you and everything else.

It arrives, and the frameworks you had before — psychological, spiritual, medical — don't fit anymore.

What you need isn't management. It isn't a diagnosis. It isn't someone who will either pathologise what happened or perform amazement at it.

It's someone who knows the territory. Who has read the maps and walked with people in this dark, and understands that what's happening is neither madness nor enlightenment — but something that requires both rigour and reverence to move through.

That's what this is.

The Territory

There is a spectrum that runs from deliberately cultivated flow states — the neuroscience of optimal experience, the brainwaves of meditation and deep creativity — all the way to full mystical dissolution, spiritual emergency, the experience of reality cracking open.

These are not different phenomena. They are the same territory at different intensities.

What the fMRI scans and the ancient traditions agree on: the ordinary self temporarily steps aside. Something larger comes through. The question — always — is how to come back carrying it, rather than being carried off by it.

Integration is not about returning to who you were. It's about finding out who you are now, and how to live from there.

Who This Is For

You have had an experience — or a series of experiences — that you cannot integrate alone and that nobody around you fully understands.

You might be navigating the aftermath of:

→  A psychedelic experience that won't settle

→  A kundalini awakening or spontaneous energetic opening

→  A breakdown that is trying to become a breakthrough — but you're still in the middle of it

→  A meditation or breathwork experience that went further than expected

→  A profound loss, illness, or life rupture that cracked your sense of reality

→  A spiritual or existential emergency of any kind — intense, frightening, disorientating, real

You are not a thrill-seeker. The experience has frightened or destabilised you, or simply left you somewhere new with no map. You are intelligent enough to want a rigorous framework, and honest enough to know that what happened was real. in.

What This Is Not

Flow Threshold is mentoring, not therapy. It is not a substitute for psychiatric assessment if that's needed — and I will always name that clearly and maintain a referral pathway.

What it is: skilled accompaniment through the integration of non-ordinary experience, drawing on cross-traditional frameworks, somatic approaches, and twenty-five years of navigating this territory from both the inside and the outside.

If you are in acute crisis, please contact your GP or a crisis service first. Flow Threshold is for the integration work that follows stabilisation — not for acute crisis intervention.

Why This, Why Me

I am a contributing author to Breaking Open: Finding a Way Through Spiritual Emergency (Watkins, 2022), edited by Jules Evans — the field's primary anthology on navigating spiritual crisis. My own chapter is in it.

I have spoken on spiritual emergency at the British Psychological Society, the London Philosophy Society, the Psychedelic Society, and TEDx.

My training spans Integral Somatic Psychology, the Comprehensive Resource Model, shamanic energy medicine, flow states and performance psychology, yoga nidra, and twenty-five years inside the contemplative traditions.

I have mentored people through spiritual emergency arising from psychedelics, kundalini awakening, meditation, labour, grief, and spontaneous opening — across a wide range of intensity and complexity.

But the most important thing I bring is this: I came through it myself. The territory is not theoretical.

Both my emotional and spiritual emergencies proved to be keys to the kingdom.

— Lou Tomlinson, Breaking Open

Lou's chapter in Breaking Open is often highlighted by readers as particularly moving and beautiful. Her talks also deeply connect with audiences. She has the ability to mix together poetry, psychology and spiritual wisdom, with humour and empathy.

TESTIMONIALS

Lou helped me navigate through one of the toughest and most transformational times in my life. Working with her was like working with a long-lost friend who knew exactly who I was, and showed me the vision. Through many practices, she helped me get back on my feet and more connected with myself than ever before. Often I would think to myself: she just gets it.

— Chelsea Erickson, Entrepreneur, USA

"Navigating non-ordinary states is a frightening, fascinating, mystical experience. Having someone as gifted as Lou guiding me has allowed me to flourish and walk my path with confidence. An expert horse tamer for the soul."

— Matt Grainger, Writer and Entrepreneur, UK

"At times when I feel like the fire inside me has died down to a single ember, Lou takes that ember and gently fans it until the flames start to flicker again. There is no one I'd rather have beside me on this adventure. The magic in her is truly contagious."

— Rosie Leeson, Coach and Healer, UK
